The Bug Catchers

Description

Tsaro is one of those children who has to mostly entertain himself and discover the world on his own, fueled by a powerful imagination, driven by unquenchable curiosity. He's taken to the treetops to catch insects with the little bug cage and net his father made for him (sadly, his parents are no longer around, he's being raised by his adoptive Grandmother.)

But Tsaro isn't the only one hunting bugs. A twin-tuft prowls the canopy, using her tail as a lure for the insects she lives on. She can't help but be curious about the little creature that's invaded her hunting grounds. ^_^

For a character that didn't exist a month ago, I sure do love this little guy. Mostly because he's adorable and brave and sweet, but largely because he's Lyrrehn and I'tsarlan's son. I wanted something very good to come from his parent's very tragic romance. Tsaro more than qualifies. I luffs him.

I used a pencil shaded sketch and colored it over digitally, kinda a messy style, going for a children's book feel.

Edit: MORE Tsaro cuteness here! --

This is such a beautiful picture and I have to take a look at it periodically. I can't believe I haven't commented on it before!

There are just so many things I love about this that it's hard to know where to begin. Most of all it just makes me smile. This little guy may be an alien but he is every little boy. Climbing trees and catching bugs.

The expressions in this are wonderful. Surprise and curiosity on both sides. It makes me eager to know what happens next. Do they both scramble backwards in shock, or hold that pose for a moment and check each other out? I love the similarity in their pose and goals. Seems like they were just made to meet.

There's a great amount of detail in the warm evening lighting, the fireflies and that great little cage he has attatched to his tail. I also like that there is just a hind of leaves, suggesting dense foliage, but not enough so it pulls attention away from our two explorers.

There is VERY few things I could find to make this pic better. But as I have to have a balanced critique I'm going to nitpick. The shadows in his hair feel perhaps a little too dark. There's that lovely light on his face and then a super dark shadow.....then again that might just be my dying monitor. The only other thing I could think of, which looks lovely as it is, but might be a little easier on the eyes is the light behind them. It's perfect where it is but softening the edges of each color change might be a bit less distracting.
